Families and Freedom

Families lost family member and Freedom tells the story of the remaking of the African American family during the Civil War era. The editors draw upon the letters lost family member and testimony of freed slaves. Former slaves recount their experiences from the elation of finding lost family members to the sadness of discovering that long-lost spouses had remarried.
